They didn’t break up. I believe it was more of a hiatus from touring. I’m not 100% sure if they’ll have a full blown tour, maybe they’ll just play a few gigs here and there.

Friday night Matt played at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. I met him, I showed him my RX tattoo. He hugged me and bought me a shot of jager. I now can die with a smile on my face.

Matt is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, when i met him they played a private show in the underground at the drake hotel in toronto, I had no ticket for his show because they were opening for gym class heroes and teenyboppers had sold out the show, he approached me because i was alone and started talking to me, as soon as i said that i grew up in costa rica he started telling me about how much he loves costa rica and how he sometimes comes down and stays in a hut on the beach, that this guy that owns a restaurant/bar lets him use in exchange of him playing in the place. I ended up having vegetarian lunch with him and Joe, then they brought me in their tour bus and got me into the show as their “official photographer” even though at the time i barely knew how to take photos and they had used all of their comp tickets already. Great dude

I was pretty much floored when I heard this on Friday night. Embree is one of the few musicians who evokes an incredibly strong emotional response from me every time I see him perform. Last summer during the final RxB shows? Teary-eyed. Last night? Chills (and teary-eyed, but I think that’s just because I’m overly emotional because he’s had such an impact on my life).

His passion for music and the way he connects with the audience is unlike anything I’ve ever felt with any other musician. And I know I sound like a crazy person writing this, but I hope you all experience this same feeling with one of your favorite musicians some day, and you too sound like a bumbling fool when you try to explain it to other people.

Last Thursday I got the chance to see my hero, Matt Embree of RX bandits, play a solo set. It was very inspiring and a lot of fun! I never stopped moving (only to take some in-focus photos), and it was just incredible to hear him play right in front of me.

I’ve been listening to RX Bandits since I still lived in South Africa, years ago. Moments like these, when I realize where I’m standing and who I’m watching, really are mind blowing. I feel very forunate to have the opportunity to meet my biggest influences. This guy has absolutely no idea how much his guitar playing and musical message has influenced me. He has a very unique style and voice.

I am a total weirdo when it comes to meeting people who inspire me/famous people. I always try avoid meeting them. When this show ended I went to the bathroom and when I came out I literally bumped into Matt Embree. I very awkwardly shook his hand and told him I enjoyed the show, and then the conversation escalated to talk about surfing in South Africa and the dangers of shark attacks. It was a good time. Though, I was very nervous the entire conversation and bolted as soon as I could. I’ll post more photos in new posts.
